What Employers Value

We undervalue and undersell ourselves every single day. Even as jobseekers we have huge capacity and huge potential but are sometimes the last to see it. I read an article yesterday about US employers hiring ex-service personnel. Companies that do this want to do it again. Here was the reason given in one instance, “they wanted to hire him for the things they couldn’t teach him. The intangibles that would make him excel.” That’s an employer’s way of saying, we’re hiring you for you. In other words, it’s not your technical skills (we can teach those)....

Keep Looking

“If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” Steve Jobs Don’t you just love it when this happens? When a few words find you at the right time and it makes your day. I’m a big fan of this too but I like it even more when I discover where these little quotes fit in. How the words around a little sentiment add even more depth and colour. When you learn a quote like this one from Steve Jobs came from a speech given to a graduating year of students. Little quotes that inspire & sound great are meat and drink to blogs and sites like Tumblr & Twitter. But I...

“There is no hierarchy when it comes to your career.”

I enjoyed reading Think and Grow Rich but found it a little too hierarchical. Of course there’s a huge amount to learn from great careers but when I listened, really listened, all those exceptional career voices seemed to be saying the same thing… “We haven’t done anything you can’t” “We aren’t above or beyond you” “We’re on the same level” “We’re just like you” “We’re with you” All of us have the same raw materials as the greatest of women and men. There is no hierarchy when it comes to your career. “everyone who looks, sees something...

Nothing Less Than A Flourish

We believe every career can flourish. To flourish, a career needs to be clear on two simple things: 1. where you are now 2. where you want to be. The Career Explorer’s Journal provides evidence, encouragement and support so that one day your career will flourish too, or start flourishing again. Because it’s our firm belief you deserve nothing less. [Image courtesy of Alain Bachellier on Flickr.com] * * * *...

true story

Every career has an inspirational true story of its own Knowing our true story is more than inspirational It directly affects how successful and satisfied we feel Some people know their story well and tell it beautifully Some know their story in part or in pieces Others have no knowledge of their story at all Every time I hear a true career story I find it inspiring But what inspires me most is the way each story is found In the ability to discover our true career story we are equal No one is favoured, no person or group has monopoly. The only advantage is our willingness to look and to...

Why I love being a careers adviser – Part 2

Here are some more quotes from careers advisers about why they love their job. I had no idea there would be so many great reasons! “By nature I am a nosey person so I love being able to ask questions and find out about people’s lives” “I like helping people, finding out about job markets, training opportunities, networking and so on” “[I love] The people and being part of sometimes surprising positive outcomes as a result of our meeting” “Being able to provide a powerful listening ear to those in need and providing useful information, empowering...
